David Wells heads up IDC’s research into intelligent Big Data and Analytics in Europe. His core research coverage includes the current and planned activities of key vendors in the space, the requirements of European big data users, and mechanisms for assessing how companies can use specific techniques, strategies and technologies to use analytics, big data and AI to achieve their strategic goals.
For the past several years David has been Research & Business Development Manager at Royal Holloway, University of London, responsible for technology transfer and commercialization projects, leveraging the University’s research and intellectual property in areas such as AI and Computer Science, Mathematics and Information Security. He secured funding for two spin-out companies and was a founding director of one of these, which was developing an innovative system for big data social media analytics. Prior to that, he was Ovum’s principal analyst covering data warehousing and business intelligence for several years, being the author of the influential Ovum Evaluates: Data Warehouse Tools series of reports. Before Ovum, David was a software engineer for 13 years, including working for a start-up developing an innovative post-relational database system and 5 years as a researcher in AI and advanced data management technologies in the Information Management Lab at HP Labs Bristol.
David has an MA in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University.
